2" x 2" Exercise

Objective

To demonstrate an understanding of the design principles

To demonstrate an understanding and use of the typographic grid.

To be able to identify the historic type classifications.

I had a good understanding of the above mentioned at the beginning of this project, but I feel as though my skills began to sharpen while I worked my way through the process. This project felt as if I was slowing down, and taking time to appreciate and consider the principles of design, the grid, and the nuances of type more deeply.

Process

Begin by creating 50 thumbnail sketches (2" squares) that each contains 1 or 2 letters, plus a numeral. Consider each individual composition and its use of positive/negative space. Use white, unlined paper, (tracing paper is fine) and thin
and/or thick black markers.

No pencil, please.

I made the 50 sketches on letter–sized copy paper on which I had printed nine 2" x 2" squares. I used my iPad as a light table to trace letters and numbers that I had printed from Illustrator. I made the mini–compositions by playing with the positive/negative space of the square as well as the letters and numbers, contrasting forms, creating direction & rhythm, breaking the forms, etc.

Select 9 of the strongest compositions. Make 2 copies of each square (Trace or photocopy.) Keeping each group separate from the other, cut out each square and arrange them to create one 6" x 6" composition. (You'll have two compositions, total. Grid should be apparent. This exploration is about form, using the typographic grid and creating a unified composition with clear use of design principles.

I kept 18 of the squares. I rapidly assembled and disassembled the 6" x 6" compositions, scanning them with my iPhone at each "final" state. At the end, I had ten 6" x 6" compositions; click here to view them.
